This really seems like an article from The Onion. No really:

Why don’t women just tell you what they want, you ask? Silly rabbit, then they wouldn’t be women!

The hell.

Why am I not surprised this was originally an AskMen article?

Sheesh.

This is fucking stupid.

FUCK YOU FOX NEWS I AM WOMAN HEAR ME ROAR

You know, a lot of the relationship advice given is pretty sound, but how it’s presented is problematic.

It’s fine to sometimes treat the person you love to something nice.
It’s fine help someone with heavy things— distribute the load between you, open doors when their hands are full.
It’s fine to give compliments.
It’s fine to have opinions and do not always make the other person responsible for the final decision.
The last one, however, some people want marriage, others don’t. If you’re invested in someone enough to be considering commitment, then your thoughts on marriage are something the two of you need to be discussing.

But the jokes about not knowing how to call the plumber, and to make this a barb about feminists.  The perpetuation of this idea that women never say what they mean .  .  .  I mean, that whole final paragraph?  uggh.

It’s way more than the presentation. You’re right, it’s not a bad thing to help your girlfriend or be nice to her, but it is a problem when men are being told to ignore the things women say. Oh, I’m sorry—to ignore the things their women say (because, you know, feminism is just the squeeky toy that keeps your women entertained so that she plays quietly in the corner and obeys your commands).

The five items listed are:
1. “I can carry my own bag”
2. “Don’t objectify me!”
3. “I’ll pay my share”
4. “I can think for myself”
5. “I won’t be shackled into marriage”

The author has so far twisted the point (clearly because he cannot understand the point in the first place). It’s not that feminists (or women in general) put up an independent front until a man comes along and can take some of the burden of freedom away from her. It’s that the problems of objectification, oppression, and existential slavery ought not exist in a relationship in so far as that is possible given the fucked up way we’re all brought into our symbolic economy.

When in a relationship we are not looking at our partners as property, but as existentially free entities, the connotations of our actions—the same actions that are preformed in relations of oppression—change. It’s not that an “independent woman” hates for men to look at her. She hates that when they do, and when they cat call, and when they objectify her, she is reminded of herself as a victim of oppression, no matter how culturally successful she becomes.

It’s way more than presentation. It’s foundational ideology.
