National Punch A Slutt Day-A reminder that the...
A friend of mine recently made me aware of a Facebook event called “National Punch and Slutt Day” and I am appauled. There’s so much that is objectionable about this that I’m having trouble properly responding to it. Let’s start with what a slut(t) is. It’s a woman who has too much sex with any number of men indiscrimiately and is morally and ethically...

Urban Lake
I’ve been putting (throwing?) the Preface together for the last few days, and it struck me as strange that we have mostly untitled works of art. In fact, most every photo that was submitted this year was title-less. And that seems so incorrect. What is the purpose of a title? I suppose it has several. One being to prepare the viewer/reader/listener for what they are about to experience....

A room I never use: Queer Rant →
Something that particularly bothers me is a certain hypocrisy in the ‘gay community.’ Well, perhaps it would be more accurate to call it a cultural dissonance. But, in any case, the thing is is that gay culture in the U.S. (and by gay culture I mean dominant gay male culture, which you normally…

New favorite site to drool over →
Aside from the fact that this site has amazingly beautiful clothes, there’s something wonderful about it. On the dresses front page (which is what has been linked), there are plus sized girls and dresses mixed in with the other girls. Not only are they there, but they look stunning and are wearing dresses that most companies wouldn’t make for pluses. Kudos on a sweet site!

a position to act
There can be a very strong case made for the position that social movements are more difficult now than they were in the 1950s and 1960s because we have social taboos and legislation that masks the fact that inequality still very much exisits. We have masked systemic issues with political correctness, which makes it more difficult to prove injustice. For instance, now that it is no longer...

An important message inspired by the com...
As some of you have heard me frequently complain, I feel quite unsettled in my major. Communications classes have, thus far, been almost totally devoid of interesting, new, or useful information (with the exception of 132). When I read the books, I of course learn things, but it hasn’t been anything too revolutionary or anything practical enough for me to take out into the “real...

Things at Goucher that continue to confuse me...
Why did I just get an email about seniors having to live off campus to accommodate incoming freshman, when people are almost always told that they are not allowed to live off campus when the request it? Oh, Goucher…we’re going to have a fun semester if I can sneak onto SGA.

The angry feminist
So, I think it’s safe to say, officially, at this point, that I am a feminist. And I admit it freely. And I handle the fucking stupid stereotypes that come with that admission, like that I’m hairy and loud and hate men and am against cooking and a barrage of other insightful tidbits. But there is one stereotype that I think I live up to. I am angry. I am an angry feminist. When...

Of thrift stores, gender, and arrest
It’s time for another round of proof why Tasia should not be taking psychoanalysis. Andy and I are in a giant thrift store, fashioned after a Walmart/Target. It’s lucky we found the place at all, since it looked so minuscule from the outside. As we pass through the door beads, there is a vintage, Goucher-looking girl behind a messy counter who seems quite disinterested in our...

The strangeness of food
Food and eating and weight and nutrition are such strange things to us and land in such a strange place in our culture. It is not uncommon to hear conversations where one party spends time belittling the food, eating, weight, and/or nutrition of another. Things like… Why are you eating so many carbs? Why don’t you do yourself a favor and get fruit instead of a bagel? You need more...

theory of pants
Recently I have one factor that determines how good my day is more than anythign else. That factor is how early in the day I can remove my pants. not in a sexual way, but in a time-to-relax way. On the worst days, I end up never removing my pants and going to class the next day in the same clothes I was wearing the day before. On the next worst days, I have time to go home and change my clothes,...
